The Squid and the Whale

Melissa M. and I went to see The Squid and the Whale last night at the Savannah Film Festival. Melissa gets two "SP" passes every year. I am not sure what the "SP" stands for, but I decided it might stand for Staff Perks.

The film is based on the true childhood experiences of Noah Baumbach and his brother. It's centered on two young boys dealing with their parents divorce in Brooklyn in the 1980's.

The film starred Jeff Daniels and Laura Kline. Jeff's character, Bernard Berkman was a complete ass, but amusing. He played this character rather convincingly. Laura Kline played her character equally well. The scene where she bursts out laughing at her husbands’ suggestion they get back together. Well, let's just say I related to the insanity of it.

Jeff Daniels was present at the festival and after our viewing he was presented an award from the Savannah College of Art & Design. He gave a short speech and then there was an opportunity for students and others to ask him questions.

It was an excellent movie and a rather enjoyable evening.
